Benny Phillips, High Point College graduate.
Worked 48 years for High Point Enterprise. Was sports editor 32 years. Was a monthly columnist for Stock Car Racing Magazine 27 years, and an on-camera commentator 12 years for MotorWeek Illustrated, one of the first national television motorsports shows, which aired weekly on WTBS and ESPN. Retired in January of 2008.
Won more than 35 national and state journalism awards. Was National Motorsports Press Association Writer of the Year seven times. In 1986 became the first journalist to win the Buddy Shuman Memorial Award, presented annually at the NASCAR New York Banquet to the person or company for outstanding contributions and loyalty to the sport of auto racing. Other awards include the Henry T. McLemore Motorsports Press Award for excellence in journalism, the Joe Littlejohn Award for loyalty to auto racing, and the Sears Craftsman of the Year Award in 1983.
Has written four books on motorsports, including Dale Earnhardt’s biography at the request of Earnhardt, entitled “Determined.”
