Michael Thomas Draelos, MD, is a board certified gastroenterologist and internist. He has been in group practice in High Point, North Carolina, for 20 years where he is one of the senior partners in High Point Gastroenterology. His areas of special medical interest include hepatobiliary disease and colorectal cancer. He is a frequent speaker in the medical community and serves as a legal expert on areas of gastroenterology medical care standards. In 1995, he and other visionary physicians conceptualized and founded Cornerstone Healthcare, currently employing 170 physicians with over 800 employees. Cornerstone Healthcare is a unique multispecialty group bringing together medical practices from High Point, Winston, Asheboro, and Kernersville to deliver quality medical care in the Piedmont Triad. Dr. Draelos served as a board member for Cornerstone Healthcare for the first five years in the position of Treasurer. He also functioned as chairman of the finance committee in charge of developing laboratory, radiology, and medical research programs, during which he was the director of Medical Research for Cornerstone Health Care.
Dr. Draelos graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, with highest distinction. He attended medical school at the Arizona Health Sciences Center and graduated in the top 10% of his class earning recognition as a member of the medical honorary Alpha Omega Alpha. More recently, he has been selected as one of America’s Top Doctors. A published author in the field of hepatology, he recently presented research on colonoscopic risks at the national meeting of the American Gastroenterological Society in Washington, DC.
During his medical career, Dr. Draelos has served in numerous positions at High Point Regional Hospital. He was Chief of Internal Medicine, Medical Staff Secretary, and is presently Chief of Medical Specialties serving on the High Point Regional Hospital Medical Executive Committee. In addition, he has been active in the High Point community by volunteering at the Community Clinic. A member of the AMA and NC Medical Society, he has served as Secretary for the High Point Medical Society and as a delegate to the Medical Society of North Carolina.
He has served on the American Cancer Society board, speaking to community groups and high school students on cancer prevention. During his tenure on the High Point Little League board, he led a fund raising project to construct bleacher awnings. Recently, he has been in involved at the Ward Street Mission, including installation of an irrigation system to support their beautification efforts. He is a member of several physician owned medical projects in town, and currently sits on the board of directors of the High Point Medical Center.
Dr. Draelos is married to Zoe Diana Draelos, MD, a clinical and research dermatologist, who also practices in High Point. They have been members of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church since coming to town. They have two boys, Mark and Matthew, who are High Point natives. Dr. Draelos enjoys family life, music, tennis, skiing, computer programming and aviation. He recently became the proud recipient of his multiengine instrument rating. |
